Air bags have become a ubiquitous safety feature in cars over the past decade but they have yet to really make their mark on the airline industry; however, due to increased safety regulations imposed by the FAA many major airlines are looking into air bags as a viable alternative to shoulder harnesses and other cumbersome safety alternatives. According to the Wall Street Journal, Delta Airlines will be the first US carrier to start installing airbags on flights, mostly in the Business Elite sections of their 767's. About 80% of smaller aircraft are now equipped with airbags, the only noticeable difference for the traveler being a slightly thicker seatbelt across their laps. No word yet on whether or not the kid kicking the crap out of the back of your seat will be able to set if off.
