Late-day light, Blue Mountain, Carbon County, [Pennsylvania] as seen from a hillside near Palmerton.
Note the largely denuded slopes of Blue Mountain, as well as the scrub-oak barren on the hill in the foreground. For many years, extensive zinc-smelting operations severely degraded the local environment, destroying vegetation and helping to create soil erosion. The zinc smelters are no longer in operation; the area is now the site of an ambitious Superfund project, and the vegetation and soil are recovering.
